Al-Haq Center for Applied International Law Concludes Human Rights Training for EUPOL COPPS

Activities and Courses

  1. Orientation and tailored courses:

Al-Haq center organizes several orientation courses per year in both Arabic and English, tailored courses are also given to specific audiences upon request. The running orientation courses at the center are in two forms: one that targets internationals in the OPT, whether working in international organizations, diplomatic missions or those who work for the local civil society. Another form is conducted in Arabic for local civil society actors, human rights defenders and interested individuals. Those courses are between 2-4 days and constitute a theoretical part given in lectures and discussions on international law and international human rights law, and a practical part covered by field visits and exposure tours to locations. Field visits provide participants with a first-hand experience, especially in regards to violations taking place in the OPT.

  1. Summer School program:

Al-Haq center organizes one summer school each year targeting professionals and academics in the fields of international law and human rights. Participants from around the world are invited to apply to the program. Once in the country, Al-Haq center organizers a two weeks program for participants, where they are given the opportunity to learn the theoretical and applicable parts of international law and international human rights law. During their stay, participants have the chance to meet numerous civil society actors, human rights organizations and groups, learn about the history of Palestine, visit refugee camps, displaced villages, Palestinian townships, learn about the daily life of Palestinians under occupation, and meet with youth and active groups in both formal and informal settings. This is a unique program that gives an exceptional prospect on the situation in the OPT.

  1. Regional Seminars:

The center organizes regional seminars that serve the overall civil society sector and human rights groups in the Arab region and the OPT. Regional seminars usually reflect on current issues of international law and human rights encountered in the OPT and other Arab countries. Target groups of these seminars are human rights defenders, with previous experience of international law with the aim of developing a regional discourse and empowering others  to defend human rights throughout the region. The seminars provide participants with the opportunity to exchange knowledge, practical experience and alternative approaches to work on human rights in situations fueled by anti-democratic practices and the lack of available spaces for organizations and activists to organize and work.

  1. Local Capacity Building Program and community outreach:

Training courses are held throughout the year in international humanitarian law and human rights for students, human rights defenders, journalists and interested individuals from the community. These courses concentrate on combining both the theory and practical application of international humanitarian law and human rights. The center establishes professional relations with individuals and groups who have completed the training in order to support and motivate them to continue their professional development and to use their knowledge and skills to defend human rights in the OPT. Through building such connections with the local civil society, Al-Haq center aspires to act as a hub for active individuals who are motivated to work on human rights issues and applications of international law. Topics of training might vary based on the needs of each group being trained. Some training sessions deal with the general introduction to international law and international human rights law and others deal with specific human rights treaties signed by the State of Palestine. The activities of the Local Capacity Building Program may take the form of lectures, training courses,  and open discussions/lectures given to the public on recent events and trends.
Part of the local capacity building program constitutes training sessions, lectures, and seminars held to raise the capacity at Al-Haq by further expanding the knowledge available at the center and the various departments at Al-Haq.
The Community outreach approach is designed to serve the long term strategies of the center to serve as a hub and space for active youth and individuals from the community with the aim of expanding their knowledge and capacities to use information for the benefit human rights and communities in the OPT.

  1. Research Fellowships and Experts Visits:

One year and six months fellowships are offered to international scholars, providing an opportunity to conduct focused research on issues of international law in the OPT. Fellows are given the chance to produce research on a topic of their expertise in coordination with the center, and the research team at Al-Haq. Researchers are also given access to a serious number of indexes, documentations and books by the International Law library at Al-Haq. Through this opportunity, fellows will be able to apply their knowledge to the situation on the ground in the OPT and present their research in the form of seminars to Palestinian law schools, human rights professionals, and others.
The Al-Haq center for International law also hosts international experts who are invited to join Al-Haq, learn about the ongoing research and work in regards to international law and international human rights law. Experts are also invited to present their work and knowledge to the Palestinian public, civil society groups, and human rights organizations in the OPT.
For both researchers and experts visit, Al-Haq facilitates and helps coordinate meetings with civil society groups, including field visits to localities exposed to international law violations.
