The Independent Research Series is a new initiative organized by the Al-Haq Center for Applied International Law to provide a platform for critical, emerging and interdisciplinary research around the Palestinian pursuit of the right to self-determination.
In its Advisory Opinion on the Legal Consequences of the Israeli Occupation, the court conveyed to the UN General Assembly the duty of envisioning mechanisms to end the illegal occupation of Palestine. The court also stressed third state obligations to cooperate towards ending the illegal occupation and not to recognise it effects. This study argues that the premise of such actions ought to be the vision of Palestinian self-determination as decolonisation. Building on this premise, the essay explores relevant precedents of decolonisation.
The publication and hosting of the independent research series should not be construed as an adoption of opinions or positions reflected in the research by Al-Haq, as an organization.
